Types of Services

Financial therapy looks different for everyone.

Short-term individual therapy: Someone might have a specific problem they want to spend a couple of sessions talking about. For example: “I made a budget, but I just haven’t been able to work maintaining it into my routine. I need help to get around the mental block I feel when I open my spreadsheet.” This could be worked on in 3-6 sessions.

Long-term indvidual therapy: Others might have deeper challenges with money. They might struggle with saving or spending because of traumatic events that have happened in their lives, because they never had good role models when it came to financial decision-making, or because they feel so overwhelmed discussing money that they avoid dealing with it all together. Money challenges might be impacting their relationships or their ability to live a life in line with their values and goals. This could be someone who says “My parent always used money to control everyone else in the family, and it felt terrible. Now, I need complete control of my financial situation to feel safe, and my spouse is upset that I won’t let them in.” For these more complicated dynamics, I recommend ongoing therapy sessions, with frequent check-ins about progress you are making to make sure it is a good use of your time and resources.

Couples therapy: Money-related issues are one of the number one causes of conflict in relationships. I can meet with couples to discuss ongoing difficulties related to shared finances, decision-making, and spending behavior. I can also meet with couples proactively for premarital counseling focused on planning for a shared financial future, or for similar preparation sessions before moving in together.

The project approach: Someone with a very specific goal for financial therapy and without trauma related to money might want to focus their energy on this goal for 3-4 hours over the course of 1-2 days. This works for people who are very busy and and can’t incorporate yet another committment into their hectic weekly schedules.

The creative approach: Do you need help talking about money, but none of these options sound right to you? Reach out anyway! I can consult about your current needs and create a service plan that works for you. Do you need a personalized workshop on how to communicate effectively with your family around financial decisions? Do you want someone to present to your parent group about how to talk to kids about money? I can write a up a proposal and pricing plan for your project and let you decide if it meets your needs.

How we’ll meet: I currently offer all services via telehealth, on a secure video conferencing platform.
